Smithville has a intersting website about a steam boilier explosion killing several people in the early rail road days.  http://www.texasescapes.com/TexasRailroads/Locomotive-Boiler-Explosion.htm

Unlike most "railroad" towns, Smithville's main street (First) doesn't run parallel to the tracks.

In addition, the railroad hasn't completely left. Repair facilities still work on cars, although not to the degree of days past. If you start at the Railroad Historical Park and walk North you'll pass the commercial district, The Smithville Times, City Hall, the Library, the Post Office, residences and eventually you’ll come to a rest area overlooking the Colorado River.

Movie Theme in Smithville  At present, Smithville displays artifacts (mostly bogus storefronts) from the movie Hope Floats. We think it’s worth mentioning that Smithville was called Smithville in the movie, the only time we can remember that happening. Even Hollywood couldn’t improve their name.

The restaurant Pockets (Hwy 90 and First St.) displays many more of the signs used in the picture.

2007 trip with a little extra added when we went to the coast a few days before  winding up at the rally.

Houston moved the Ladybird park rally to Smithville this year. 

Day 1 : Sydni had never viewed the Gulf of Mexico so we left a few days early and road down to Hy 180 to Palo Pinto where we headed south on Hy 4 (nice twist road but to many entry CGs to ride fast) down to Stephenville and a thunderstorm put us in the motel early for the night.

Day 2 : Next day we went to Smithville to check out the rally site and ride the parks. Got hemmed in by another thunderstorm so we moteled it again.

Day 3 : Missed all the nights rain and stayed dry the entire trip. GL it down to Aransus Pass then  the faerie to Port  Aransus. Sydni got to see the Ocean.

Day 4 : Beech, Aircraft Carrier Lexington and touristie things. Spent the night in CC.

Day 5 : CC to Smithville and rally. Camping.

Day 6 : Rally and Car Museum. On Hy 305 south of Bastrop there is the best Car collection I have every seen, and I have seen some good ones. Worth the time it take to  take a look. I highly Recommend it.

Day 7 : Rally and visit.

Day 8 : Load up and head west, We made it back to Brownwood stopped for the night ( to many Deer on the road.) Had a good meal and rest.

Day 9 : Brownwood to Midland. Good ride and Rally.
